Halloween is the one time in the year that people knock on your door wanting something from you. And yet as Christians we close the curtains, switch off the lights & tell the kids we don’t believe.

But what if Halloween became an opportunity to welcome, rather than a night to withdraw?

Houses of Light is a simple invitation to open the door, welcome your neighbours and let the light of Jesus shine.

Become a House of Light

A House of Light is simply a home that leaves its light on at Halloween and chooses to welcome its neighbours.

Halloween is one of the few nights each year when families we may rarely see come right to our doorstep. What if, instead of closing the curtains, we opened the door? What if our homes became places of welcome, generosity, friendship and hope? The invitation is simple:

Don’t retreat. Don’t hide your light. Open the door. Let your light shine.

Become a House of Light this Halloween.

There’s no single way to do it. You could:

🏠 Light up your home and make it a welcoming place.
🍬 Give generously - sweets, treats or serve Hot Chocolate for friends, family and neighbours.
👋 Have fun games in your driveway or create something in your community.
✨ Share your story, give away tracts or stories, or simply share something that points to Jesus.
❤️ Start a conversation - answer your door and make space for friendship.

Halloween is one of the most misunderstood cultural moments of the year for the Church For many Christians, it’s the night we dim the lights, close the curtains, and wait for it all to be over. But what if it could be something different? What if Halloween was the one night of the year when our communities actually come knocking on our doors, and the Church was ready to meet them?

In many churches, Halloween has long been treated as something to avoid. It’s linked with darkness, fear, and the occult—things Christians understandably want nothing to do with. And yet, the call of Jesus is not to hide from the world but to shine within it:

Becca’s Story

Halloween is a big deal in our village. Every year the streets fill with children and families, and as a Christian family with kids at primary school, we wanted to be part of that community spirit while doing it our own way.

We'd seen the idea of a House of Light and it stuck with us, so we got the children involved making our own signs. On the night, we set up at the end of our driveway with hot chocolate and sweets for anyone who walked past.

Word got around, and people kept coming. It ended up being such a lovely, low-key way to show we're part of the community, and it gave us so many natural moments to talk to people about why we were doing it and what our faith means to us. By Becca Pountney

For five years we’ve been exploring how to engage with Halloween from our driveway, you can read more about why we do this here. Our planning starts at the end of September when we choose our theme, then through games, and food and stories we try to create as much light and laughter as possible. Our experience is that our friendly approach to trick or treaters has been met with much gratitude and its been a great opportunity to show something of the goodness, beauty and truth of Jesus on a dark night.
